Detlef Schuppan

Detlef Schuppan (born 9 August 1954 in Essen, Germany) is a German biochemist and physician with a major scientific and clinical focus on the diagnosis and therapy of coeliac disease and wheat sensitivity, fibrotic liver diseases, and the immunology of chronic diseases and cancer. He is director of the Institute of Translational Immunology and Professor of Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology/Hepatology at the Medical Center of the Johannes-Gutenberg-University of Mainz, Germany. Amongst others he directs the outpatient clinic for celiac disease and small intestinal diseases. He is also Full Professor of Medicine and active Senior Visiting Scientist at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.
== Life ==

Detlef Schuppan was born on August 9, 1954 in Essen, Germany. His parents are Helga Schuppan (née Pahnke) and Senate President Dr. jur. Walther Schuppan. He studied chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), and Medicine at the LMU, the Philipps-University of Marburg und the Free University of Berlin (FU), Germany. In 1982, he graduated (Ph.D.) at the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried/Munich (primary structure of basement membrane collagen). In 1986, he received his medical license (M.D.) at the FU Berlin and 3 years later his 2nd Ph.D. in Medicine (summa cum laude, identification and characterization of undulin/collagen type XIV). Furthermore, he habilitated in biochemistry (1992) and in Internal Medicine (1996), in both cases at the FU Berlin.
He earned a Board Certification for Internal Medicine (1993) and Gastroenterology (1996). From 1997 to 2004, he worked as Full Professor, Chief Medical Consultant and Deputy Medical Director at the Department of Medicine I, Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2004 to 2010, he was Lecturer, first Associate, later Full Professor of Medicine and Clinical Attending/Consultant at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) of Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. In 2011, he became director of the celiac disease and fibrosis center at the Medical Center of the Johannes-Gutenberg-University (JGU), Mainz, Germany and Senior Visiting Scientist at BIDMC, Harvard Medical School. Since 2013, he has been the director of the Institute of Translational Immunology, JGU Mainz.
Schuppan had visiting professorships i.a. at Columbia University (New York), Yale University (New Haven), Duke University (Durham), the University of Maryland, the Mayo Clinic (Rochester), the Weizmann Institute of Science (Rehovot, Israel) and at the University of California at Los Angeles and San Diego.
Schuppan is married to psychologist Dr. Kristin Gisbert-Schuppan. He has three daughters and a son.
